Learning A Foreign Language
Using
Dr. O.'s Method To Fluency

PHASE II

Phase II is an advanced Foreign Language Learning
Program that requires the completion of Phase I.

It is recommended that you do not jump
to Phase II without completing Phase I.

PHASE II

PHASE II is comprised of three sections:

(1)

Intensive Listening

(2)

Intensive Speaking

and

(3)

Intensive Reading / Writing

PHASE II - In Detail

Phase II incorporates the use of the workbook that accompanied
the audio material. Phase II is a repetition of Phase I with
these differences:

(i)

The hour used in the memorization of
dialogues is now spent using the textbook.

Intensive Reading / Writing - In Detail

Within the one month allocated to study a three unit
block, you are to complete the written exercises
and the other exercises offered within that three
unit block.

You are to remain within the three unit block of that
month and not skip ahead to do the exercises of
future units
.

That is, if you are studying units 4-6,
do the exercises within units 4-6 only.

This is the end of the intense
reading & writing of Phase II.

Further down is a 'refresher' of how to approach
the listening / speaking material for Phase II

You are to study the units of the language course in
BLOCKS of '3s' per month, until the study material
is finished.

FOR EXAMPLE: If you choose a
language Course that has 16 Units
( Like Teach Yourself Dutch )

MONTH 1 Study UNITS: 1 - 3

MONTH 2 Study UNITS: 4 - 6

MONTH 3 Study UNITS: 7 - 9

MONTH 4 Study UNITS: 10 - 12

MONTH 5 Study UNITS: 13 - 15

MONTH 6 Study UNITS: 14 - 16 **

** See Units 14 & 15 are repeated
again to give a "3 Unit Block".

You are to consider 'one month' to be the
date you start to the next month of that day.

FOR EXAMPLE:

1st month: You start Units 1 - 3:
September 15, 20XX and End October 15, 20XX

2nd month: You Start Units 4 - 6:
October 16, 20XX and End November 16, 20XX

And so on....

THE BEGINNING: PHASE II

DAYS 1 - 9

(a)

You are to listen to your block of
3 units, 3 times per session.

(b)

Listen to the Audio with both ears.

That is: You are to hear the language
material with both RIGHT and LEFT ears.
(Use both headphones)

For days 1 - 9, you are not to repeat out loud, anything!
Even if prompted by audio. Just relax and listen for
3 times per session.

1/3 into the month: PHASE II

10th Day - 15th Day

(a)

You are to listen to your block of 3 units, 3 times per session.

(b)

Listen to audio with both right and left ears.

(c)

Start to repeat out loud as prompted by the audio.

(d)

You are to repeat freely the audio material as you choose,
using your PAUSE button. That is: give yourself as much time as
you need to repeat clearly and try as much as possible to repeat
without your native accent (imitate the native speakers the
best you can).

RESTRICTION:

In the 3 times you listen to the audio in a session:

(i)

For the first run of your 3 unit block -
Listen only - Do not repeat
out loud
....

(ii)

For the second & third runs of your 3 unit
block (to complete a session) - repeat out loud.

That is:
Do not repeat out loud during the
first run of 3 units during the session

Repeat out loud for the last two
runs
of the three units for the session.

One Half into the month: PHASE II

16th Day to End of month

(a)

You are to listen to your block of 3 units, 3 times per session.

(b)

Listen to audio ( for the whole session )
with one ear only (use one headphone).

Then alternate ears for the rest of the month.

That is:
On the 16th day, listen with RIGHT ear.

On the 17th day, listen with LEFT ear.

On the 18th day, listen with RIGHT ear.

And so on....

(c)

After listening only to first run of audio,
repeat OUT LOUD last two runs as prompted by audio.
That is: Listen only the first run, then start to repeat
out loud the last 2 runs, to complete a session.

Testing

Reserve the last day of each study month to test your
understanding of the three unit block you have studied.

SAMPLE TEST

Pick 2 - 3 dialogues

4 - 5 Exercises within the 3 unit block

You can add Speech as part of your test.

Then... Test yourself! (please refrain from testing yourself
using 'a time limit'. That is: Refrain from giving yourself a '1
hour test', but rather give yourself as much time as possible
to see if you have understood the material you studied.

Because of testing purposes, try not to write into your
textbook! Provide yourself with notebooks for all writing.

Do not be too hard on yourself in terms of grading!
(Remember you always get an 'A+' for trying!)

Give yourself a grade for each unit, then take an
average of the 3 unit block - this will be your final
grade for the month.

Example: Unit 1, you scored: 95 %. Unit 2: 98 %
and unit 3: 93% : Your final grade for the 3 unit block.

95 + 98 + 93 = 286.

286 / 3 (divided by 3) = 95.3 % !
( For the month you studied units 1 - 3 )

Guideline (sample) for written dialogue grading.

You can grade yourself on a 'correct spelling' /
'correct word placement' basis (important in some
verb conjugations).

Example: A dialogue has 100 words. You test yourself
by writing out the dialogue by heart. Then, check your
spelling and correct word placement, deducting
'1 point' for wrong spelling and '1/2 (half) point'
for incorrect sentence placement of words.

Remember: You can also use some days
in the month to give yourself a 'mock exam'!

(Optional)

Use an additional hour to repeat
the dialogues memorized from Phase I.

You are encouraged to repeat out loud the dialogues
of any unit, not just the dialogues of the
three unit block being studied that month.

Please note: This part is optional, be as free as possible
and repeat out loud anything offered in the course of the
language you are studying.

Summary Phase II

Phase II incorporates intensive reading / writing. It is
really a repition of Phase I, leaving the memorization of
dialogues for the free repeat of dialogues.

Further Challenges:

(I)

Use this method to learn 3
Foreign Languages in 4 years!

(II)

Go to your local University, upon completion of Phase II.
Enroll in their beginning course(s) and take the course(s) -
EXAMPLE: Take French I then, French II (most Universities
allow the taking of single courses). Pick up college credits!

(III)

If you feel adventurous, travel and study the language
you studied using this method, abroad and earn credit for it!

Last Notes:

If you miss a day of study, just add it and stop at the later date!

I hope you enjoy the study of foreign languages using
this method. Hopefully in future, you pick up and go
to the country of the language you studied!

You can download Software: (I recommend Freerip)
to help put CD to MP3 - where you can easily rewind /
play from the convenience of your MP3 player.

Good Luck! You can do it!
